Lors du drainage-taupe, on moule dans le sol des galeries-taupe, qui, fonctionnant comme des drains particulièrement serrés (écartement variant de 1,5 à 3,5 m) et recueillant l'eau, débouchent dans la tranchée de drainage, où un remblai perméable assure la liaison hydraulique entre la galerie-taupe et le drain (qui joue surtout le rôle de collecteur).
